Bizhan is a fascinating guy and a talented artist. I’ve known him a short time but already have had some long conversations. He is an illustrator and the author of several comic books which can be found here. Stay tuned for part two later this week.

I met Iman recently at a cast party for David Mamet’s play “Race”. His fiancee Katrinah was one of the leads. The play left me a little disconcerted and I entered that party expecting the actors to be the characters they played in the production. Iman wasn’t in it but turned out to be just the guy I needed to talk to. He is an actor and an activist. His performance medium however ranges from poetry to Hip Hop to Theatre. His activism appears to be an avocation. We have a term defining conversation which I hope is the first of many to come.This will appear in two parts the first ends abruptly. I kept it the way it is.

This is Josh Homme of Queens of the Stoneage recorded for a print interview I was going to write for the Los Angeles based Varla magazine around 2004, though I suspect it may have been 05, but ten years sound better than 9. I enjoyed this it was never intended for anyone but me to hear and transcribe but I think it’s still listenable as a podcast so dig it. Oh by the way some of it ended up being printed in RVA mag around 06 I think but Varla got stiffed

I recorded this conversation at something of a Punchline reunion party. I had greater ambitions to get more people, but everybody was shy except for Kate. Kate is the wife of my boy Jeyon Falsini and a scholar of eastern religions, who likes to get tantric about tantra. She schools me on some of that stuff. It’s a fun conversation, much briefer than usual. I got her hubby on the mic but they had to get the baby home so it got cut off, this is what remains and its not bad in it’s own right.

Arik is an extremely talented artist who has carved an awesome niche for himself like water carves a niche in stone. He is one of the few people I have known who seems to have always known what he wanted to do and done it. Arik was my best friend and roommate during some formative and bonkers years in NY in the nineties. I cant overstate how much of an influence he had on me at the time. Jeff is a writer comedian and curator of a variety of live performers. His “And I am not Lying” variety show has been a thing for a while up in the Big City and Jeff has appeared on the Moth Radio Hour and This American Life. Most recently he’s been doing stand-up which brought him to town around Xmas for a show at Coalition Theatre. Look him up. He’s a sweetheart.

Bob Gorman is a member of Gwar, while not a founding member he’s been involved since early days. Bobby doesn’t play an instrument but he is instrumental in the entire production from costume design, to production, to tour management to business management. In addition to his contributions to Gwar he is an artist in his own right a filmmaker and documentarian. Look out for his Gwar retrospective and contribute it if you got some old footage.

Eliza is a pure bred Church Hill, Richmond, Virginia girl. I didn’t really know her growing up but since I have grown up I have become increasingly fascinated by what she is doing out in the world. I have a recently found a renewed appreciation for the comic arts, Eliza as a student and teacher of improv and Comedy writing who is making a career out of writing for other comedians such as Joan Rivers and Kamau Bell-as well as her own stand-up, is not only of interest to me as an ex pat Richmonder but as a comic and a writer. She’s funny as shit and I think also kind of a badass. If I did what she did I’d have curled up in a fetal position and pulled the covers over my head a long time ago. This is a long one and I get a little soapboxy but hopefully you can still enjoy Eliza even though you wish that I might Cailla la Voca at times.

Dusty Ray Simmons or Dusty is a ridiculously ubiquitous guy in the Richmond music scene the bands I can name off of the top of my head that he’s been in include: Gravy-V, Dj Williams Projekt, Skydog, The Big Payback, The Rootdowns and now Fear of Music(a Talking Heads tribute band). He’s a great dude and one I am always happy to run into. Positive in the extreme and charming to the last. Start the click track.
