Episode 83 : Dave DiDonato

Didonato cape

Hey hey this is my man Dave DiDonato he’s a great axe wielder and an interesting dude. We interacted a bit back in the day through Punchline and once I even tried out for a band he was in but until this talk I had a lot of gaps in the timeline. I knew of HRM, The Ultimate Dragons, The Jolly Mortals and Ipecac, but not really. I just knew I related to Dave’s general love for metal but his non metallic demeanor. I’ve been a fan of the dude for a while even without really fully comprehending the depth and breadth of Dave’s musical output from Richmond to Austin, Texas. After this chat I’m even more of one. A one of kind dude.

Episode 82: Jules Kim

JulesAn afternoon chat with my friend Jules Kim who was visiting Richmond from her home in NY. Jules is a Richmond native who has been hustling in New York for about 15 years now DJ ing in clubs and developing an international jewelry brand Bijules that can be seen accessorizing some notable celebs who I won’t go so far as to name drop now, but I’m sure you can find evidence to back this assertion up online. Jules is one of my favorite people who I haven’t managed to connect with beyond social media until the Monday after Mother’s Day and I was pleasantly surprised to find what has previously made us friends was as intact as ever. Truly a Tantric Conversation if there ever was one. Ecoutez.

Episode 81: Jason Alley

Jason

Jason has contributed a great deal to this town, there’s no denying that,  and he’s done it while being widely regarded as a mensch. There are few people that I am as happy to see at random in public. Jason was an early supporter of this podcast when I still thought I’d ask others to support it instead of supporting it myself. His restaurants Comfort and Pasture are favorites of mine and have helped to put Richmond on the culinary map while still being accessible to all and welcoming to all regardless of foodie obsession level. What more can I say that won’t be covered in this 2 hour podcast? Dig in.

Episode 80 : Jon Brown

Jon Brwn 1

Jon Brown is a former member of Dragstrip Syndicate, one of my all time favorite Richmond bands and is  current member of Horsehead, among other projects. We originally planned on talking about the new Iggy Pop record which we did but it took a backseat to an organic conversation about many other subjects currently on the mind. A concise little chat that gave way to an even more sprawling talk after the mics were off. I reckon that means he’s going to have to come back but for the time being, dig this.

Episode 79 : Ryan Waste

Ryan Waste

Ryan Waste and I met at a metal show at Wonderland and he gave me his Living Fast card which I thought was awesome because it said Ryan Waste, President .I didn’t get around to checking it out until after this podcast because I only watch cat videos on YouTube but it’s great, click in the link to go straight to it. Ryan is also a founding member of Municipal Waste as well as Volture and Bat no false metal to be found in any of that. He’s a great dude and a its fucking awesome to have a guest on here who talks as much and as loud as me.

Episode 78 : Chris Dovi

Dovi D2Chris Dovi is a writer, a journalist, former host of Open Source on WRIR and part of the Codeva team. I’ve been friends on Facebook with him for a while and I could tell our politics were aligned and we both were very interested in the future of good ol’ RVA. I has a blast talking to him about journalism, Richmond politics and history. He’s a wealth of interesting knowledge about this town. Great guy. what else can I say? Listen to the podcast. Long intro with musings on Bowie, feel free to skip it.

Episode 77 : Kevin Willoughby

Kevin W

Kevin Willoughby is a drummer, sound man and all around solid guy. He’s played in Peru, Exebelle and the Rusted Cavalcade, The Sweater Band, Eagles of Freedom and is known as A.C. Fader, front of the house engineer for Three Sheets to the Wind. He does sound at Hardywood Craft Brewery, which in and of itself is a major accomplishment considering the cavernous, bizarre space that is and the bands always sound good. He’s also the Studio Engineer at Scott’s Addition Sound. Kevin and I have been crossing paths for a while and I appreciate his mellow nature and affable way. We sat down to this a few months ago but the his mic picked up nothing, so this is a re-match. As I state in the intro all the history questions happened on that one and we just go from where we are now. Enjoy. I think he’s finally pointed me the right way vis a vis microphones and sound settings for this podcast. Yuss.

Episode 76 : Alison Hancock

AH ROX

Alison Hancock drummer, bass player, former member of Hot Dolphin, current member of Peace Beast came by on a Sunday afternoon to talk. I had mic issues I think I forgot to mention that, but I know what it is now, bad mic. We had a sprawling conversation about relationships, music and spirituality, the big three. I enjoyed getting to know her a little. It’s pretty awesome when a stranger comes over and leaves a friend, well maybe an acquaintance, ok.. Facebook friends. I missed out on Hot Dolphin but will not miss out on anything else this talented, cool woman does in the future. I wish I didn’t  have to write these blurbs at all, but you have to put something here, right?  It’s kind of redundant since we cover anything I want to write here in the podcast. Its an aural experience so stop reading already and listen. It’s on iTunes. Subscribe.

Episode 75 : Bob Nastanovich

Bob N

Bob Nastanovich is a former member of Pavement and the Silver Jews. He’s been a tour manager, a horse racing afficianado and is an all around charming dude. One of the most enthusiastic lovers of music I’ve ever met and one of the only people I can’t recall ever seeing without a massive grin on his face and wink in his eye. He spent his teen years in RVA and though he has long since flown the coop. He returns to roost every now and then to see family and this is when I snared him into doing my show. Its starting to be a tradition that I grab these Richmond ex-pats when they get sucked back by the holiday family vortex. The Garden State effect or something. This time out he spun some records at Balliceaux and helped raise some money for Feedmore. I hadn’t seen him since the 90’s when I worked at the label his band was on and I have to admit I was fairly surprised it was so easy to set this up. It’s about as ADD a podcast gets but a damn good time with an awesome bloke.

Episode 74 : Billy-Christopher Maupin

BC5This is my chat with actor, director, creative director and co- founder of 5th Wall Theatre. We’ve been trying to line something up for a while since I had the chance to see him in Race and Patty Issues and I guess it happened when it happened. BC and I have a long thematically consistent chat that is the kind of thing I am always looking for when I sit down across  from someone and turn on the mics. I heard him say and heard myself say things that I needed to hear. My hope is you do too. It’s a long one but well worth it. Tantric to the extreme.
